  Bi-Weekly Flu Reports

Using real-time emergency department data collected by the EDSS System, Infection Watch Live (described below) is able to provide up-to-date information on respiratory and gastrointestinal illness in Southeastern Ontario. Reports are made available on a bi-weekly basis to generate regional syndromic surveillance flu reports, which summarize recent trends in emergency department visits and admissions.

What is Infection Watch Live?

Infection Watch Live is a risk communication tool that uses EDSS data to present current emergency department trends to local healthcare providers, educators, businesses, and community members.

How does it work?

The EDSS system receives live data containing patient age, region, and symptoms from the emergency departments of participating hospitals. Using this information, Infection Watch Live compares daily counts of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness to trends for the past 120 days. This data is presented on a regional map identifying each section’s daily standard deviation from the 120-day mean, with high standard deviations representing potential ‘hot-spots’ for respiratory and gastrointestinal illness.
